Dogmills are certainly also suitable for puppies. All our Dogmills can be used from a weight of 5 kilos and up. Therefore, a puppy should weigh at least 5 kilograms to get the Dogmill moving (easily). In addition, it is important that your puppy is rested and healthy. It is recommended to let your puppy get used to the dog treadmill in a gentle manner. Do this by exercising for up to 5 minutes at a time in the beginning. It is also wise to practice on the dog walker when it is not too hot. Introduce the Dogmill as a fun playful activity. As the owner, you can slowly push the belt forward to get the puppy used to the mechanism of the dog walking belt.
Building up training time and speed on a dog treadmill is important for a puppy to use responsibly. This is because a puppy grows very quickly and must constantly reacquaint himself or herself with the workings of his or her own body. Therefore, never leave your puppy alone in the beginning and try to read him or her. Let the puppy stop and not walk on in case of peculiarities. Finally, it is wise to keep an eye on the ambient temperature. Remember especially in hot weather: short training sessions and preferably only in the morning.
The differences between using a Dogmill for a puppy and an older dog are in the duration of a workout and the speed. For older dogs, a longer workout is (generally) acceptable. If the dog suffers from obesity, injury or old age, the dog’s muscles and condition should be built or strengthened slowly to avoid overexertion. Shorter workouts are also recommended for puppies. This will ensure that your puppy gets used to the operation of the dog walker faster. Our Dogmills offer the advantage that the speed can be determined independently by your pup (or dog) because the treadmills are non-electric. This makes it easy to build up the speed slowly.
Our Dogmills are ideally suited for small and/or young as well as large and/or older dogs. This means that puppies could also use a dogmill. An important condition, however, is that your puppy must weigh at least 5 pounds. Getting the puppy used to the dog treadmill is also very important. Make sure your puppy slowly builds up the length of the workout and the speed. Start with up to 5 minutes of walking on the treadmill at a time. In addition, be alert to the ambient temperature.
